Simple Ways to Stop Acid Reflux
Several millions of people are being struck by Acid Reflux disease – adults, children, and even infants cannot escape from its affliction.

Basically, the Acid Reflux or heartburn pertains to the disease caused by upflowing of the acid from the stomach up to the throat.

Scientifically, the process occurs when there is a relaxation that occurs in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), allowing then the stomach juices to flow back into the esophagus.

Robert asks…

Is it possible to cure acid reflux without meds?

I have SILENT REFLUX meaning it goes into my throat. But you can’t feel it, and it’s worse than acid reflux(GERD) But i really don’t want to take medicine, is it true you can get rid of it by changing diets, and how you live rather than meds?

admin answers:

The main reason for any type of acid reflux is lack of digestive enzymes and low stomach acid. An old remedy still used to help with digestion is apple cider vinegar. Ginger is also another remedy to increase digestion. Heat destroys enzymes so eating a diet higher in raw foods (eg fruits, nuts) is benefical. Chewing more thoroughly is another way to break down food to help with the digestive process. Also, you can increase digestive enzymes in the diet with digestive enzyme supplements. They are made from plants and there are no side effects. These links go into further detail:

Donald asks…

Are the “Cure your Acid Reflux Now!” ebooks on the internet a scam?

I’ve had Acid Reflux for about 3 months, medication (omeprazole) has not helped at all, neither has changing my diet to bland foods, or using apple cider vinegar or slippery elm bark powder tea. Wanting to try out the Acid Reflux “cures” on the internet, but want to know if they are legit, or a scam, before I hand over my hard earned $50, to find out how to cure myself with their “ebook” information reports online. (My Doctor just keeps prescribing more medication which is not working.) Any ideas? Has anyone tried buying the Acid Reflux “Cures” over the net?

I had acid reflux for 4 years. You need to see a Gastroenterologist. You will firstly need a Endoscopy and they will insert a Bravo capsule into you whilst you are asleep. It will monitor your levels of reflux. If consider severe enough (mine were about 3-4x normal level) you qualify for surgery (Laproscopic Nissens Fundoplication) which involves tightening the sphincter valve in your oesophagus. You have to then go on a diet for 6+ weeks – 1st week mush, 2nd week toast, 3rd week maybe mince etc and work your way back to normal food. I had that operation nearly 5years ago and have been reflux free ever since 🙂

Invest your $50 in seeing a gastroenterologist instead, if you want a real cure.

Also, has your dr tried you on different medications? Losec, Pariet etc?

Michael asks…

I found a cure for acid reflux. Has anyone else done the same?

I was on acid reflux medication for ten years. I could not sleep at night without the purple pill or Zantac. After being diagnosed with a kidney disorder that developed from a long term regimen of low dose medication, (aspirin and reflux medicine), I decided to search for the root of the problem that causes acid reflux. The Nexium pills and other types treat the symptoms of bad health, they are not the cure. If the body is not functioning correctly, there is an underlying cause that needs to be addressed. My doctor said that most people would rather keep eating what ever they want and take pills the rest of their lives than to change their diets which is the best way to eliminate the problem of acid reflux. So after researching a little I found that a diet of more raw fruits and vegetables and no fried foods with transfats etc will help my situation, but the most important thing that I found was that a major cause is caffeine. Caffeine causes certain muscles in the esophagus to relax which not only allows stomach acid to rise up into areas it should not be in but is also cases the stomach to produce more acid. As soon as I Stopped all caffeine and made moderate changes to my diet, within 3 days I was off of acid reflux medication completely and that was 3 months ago and I haven’t had caffeine or needed medication since. Some doctors will not tell you these things and will prefer to keep you on medication which is how they are trained to treat problems. I am happy to say that I am healed from a bad case of acid reflux that lasted for many years thanks to a few basic changes and I believe you can be healed as well. Best wishes.
To all who say that my situation does not apply to everyone else, I never said it did. Caffeine was not the only change that I made in my diet. I cut out fried foods, fast foods, sodas, tea, processed sugar and added more fruits and vegetables to my diet. I also waited 3 months before I reported my results. As far as all the reports and studies that some of you share here, they may be correct or they may be the result of drug companies trying to create false information to keep selling their drugs. I don’t know, but what I do know is I made a few simple changes in my life and experienced significant results. Before you discredit my story by pointing to a bunch of scientific studies, you should try for your self and see if moderate changes in diet will work. If anything your health will greatly improve and I would bet your acid reflux condition will improve as well.

admin answers:

1] I am very glad that this worked for you; but
2] it will NOT work for everyone
3] some common triggers are caffeine, fried or spicy foods, being overweight, etc.
4] any ‘acid reflux’ that is not releived by over the counter meds, and/or diet changes should be checked out by a doctor

James asks…

Why am I still having acid reflux problems while lying flat when I sleep?

Since September of 2009 I have been having problems associated with my stomach. After visiting the doctor multiple times, all of the doctors I have visited says that they can not find anything wrong with me, and they each say it seems to be acid reflux. If i try to take prilosec, nexium, and stomach acid reducing pills, it makes the symptoms worse I have changed my diet to cure this acid reflux and everything is healing. The only problems I seem to still be having is laying down flat while sleeping, and occasional stomach aches. The foods that I eat does not trigger my acid reflux, and I can basically eat anything I want, but when I try to sleep at night I have to keep my head elevated. If I try and lay flat, i get a choking sensation in my throat. This started occurring when the acid reflux first appeared. The rest of my symptoms are gone, but I still can’t seem to lay flat while I sleep. What is causing this and how can I treat it?

“What is causing this and how can I treat it?”

Gravity.. And a weak Upper Esophageal Sphincter. The UES is the pinch valve at top of the stomach. When it works properly it stops the gastric contents from emptying into the mouth and throat… Even when we stand on our heads.

It isn’t easy to fix a leaky UES, but you can live with it if you would just chock up the head of your bed. I do. I have 6 inch blocks under the feet at the head of my bed. 9″ is better. Warning: you can not get the same benefit from sleeping on a pile of pillows. That actually worsens reflux.

The Terrible Truth about Acid Reflux Disease

First of all, health acid reflux is not a disease.   It is an acquired condition which can be completely healed by eating properly.  I wonder if people had acid reflux, viagra sales gerd and heartburn a thousand years ago.  I sincerely doubt it.  I believe it is a symptom of the quality of the food we eat today, our eating habits and the stressful times in which we live.

People who eat convenience food on the run can’t expect to enjoy proper digestion.  Proper digestion requires chewing food well and not diluting the digestive juices with liquids, the worst of these being carbonated beverages.  And of course all the fat associated with convenience food makes the situation worse.  Most people who go to fast food chains eat a burger with fries and a large soda.  The employees are trained to push the soft drinks on the customers.  They look at you as if you are nuts if you opt to skip the big soft drink.

People today are always in a hurry, always late, both parents working and commuting to those jobs.  There seems to be no time to shop for and prepare quality food.  Children are forced to be self sufficient from an early age.  They prepare their own meals, microwaving food which has little food value and is loaded with sodium and fat.

We are raising a generation of future acid refluxers.  The parents are no better off, grabbing junk food to eat in the office.  No wonder so many people suffer from acid reflux.  I’m sure that the big pharma are thrilled at the prospects of future sales.

The medical community wants us to believe that only prescription drugs are the answer for the symptoms of indigestion.  Of course this is not true.  Antacids are, at best, a temporary fix and they are loaded with harmful ingredients such as sodium and aluminum.  PPI drugs (proton pump inhibitors) like Nexium and Prilosec should only be used for eight weeks, at most.  It says so right on the package, but after eight weeks what are we to do?  Furthermore, these drugs only mask and hide the symptoms and have hundreds of harmful side effects.  They don’t heal the condition!  They only make the drug makers rich at our expense!

I used to suffer from acute GERD.  I confess that I too ate on the run.  I didn’t chew my food properly.  I washed everything down with soda and became addicted to a PPI drug – that purple pill.   It was so easy and convenient.  I could abuse my body and not suffer for it.  I thought that drug was my salvation until that illusion came crashing down on me.

After several years of taking this drug, my condition became worse and I was told to double the dose.  I began to feel sluggish and tired.  My vision suffered and my blood pressure soared.  I realized that these were probably side effects of this PPI drug.   Perhaps I was suffering from malnutrition?  How does the body digest and assimilate food without stomach acid?

I did a computer search and found that there were hundreds of possible side effects.  I was shocked at what I found! I was harming my body and I wanted to stop taking this drug!  But when I tried to stop taking the PPI, the acid pumps, which had been shut off, went wild and produced more acid than ever before.

I can’t tell you how much I suffered. My esophagus was constantly burning and l feared that I would suffer permanent damage.  I couldn’t sleep at night. I was afraid to eat or drink anything but water.  My friends didn’t understand my problem.  They would call and say, “Let’s go out for Southwestern barbeque”.  Of course, I couldn’t. I loved to eat hot chili sprinkled with raw onions and jack cheese, but it was now my worst nightmare.  My life was becoming unbearable!

I was determined to beat this illness.  My doctor couldn’t help me – no one could tell me what to do.  I had to heal myself.  I became completely dedicated to finding the answers.  I studied and researched.  I wanted to discover naturopathic treatments as opposed to drugs.  I searched high and low for natural remedies that might actually cure acid reflux.  I tried every possible remedy and healthy diet I could find.  I made myself a virtual guinea pig.

In the end, I found that the answers to the acid reflux problem are really quite simple.  With a few changes in lifestyle and with the help of natural remedies, one can absolutely beat the acid reflux syndrome, without the use of drugs.

Remember, that the reason this condition exists in the first place, is due to a damaged esophagus.  Let the esophagus heal by not eating the same foods in the same way that caused the damage.   Loosing weight, exercising, chewing properly, drinking sufficient amounts of water and elevating the head at night, are all simple things that anyone can do to improve this condition.

There are also many natural ingredients found in any health store, which can help during, what I call, the acid reflux recovery period.  Herbs, such as slippery elm and marshmallow have wonderful healing properties.  Aloe vera juice, licorice and natural honey can sooth the esophagus and assist in the healing process.

I had to take control of my life and assume responsibility for my own actions.  I managed to turn things around.  I did heal myself of the acid reflux condition.  With a little knowledge and discipline, anyone can do the same.

What are the Common Myths about Acid Reflux

When you suffer from any type of health issue it is important to get the facts about it. Yet you will find that with acid reflux there are quite a few myths circulating at it. That can make it difficult to know what course of action you really need to take. Here you will find very reliable information so you can put those common myths about acid reflux to rest once and for all.

Many people believe that those suffering from acid reflux simply don’t take care of themselves. While it is true that they may need to make some lifestyle changes such as to what they eat, pilule acid reflux is definitely a medical concern. It can be the result of internal factors including ulcers, a hernia, and a weak esophagus.

You may hear to cut back on the intake of proteins. Yet doing so can mean your body doesn’t get what it needs. Instead of reducing proteins you consume simply change from fatty foods to more lean meats. You will also hear that you should avoid all caffeine which can be hard to do. Some individuals tend to eat more when they are stressed and that can trigger acid reflux. This is especially true if it is done in the hours right before bed. However, there are many people out there that overeat or eat before bed that aren’t suffering from high amounts of stress.

Take action with your own lifestyle and try out different medications. Take to your doctor about how often you suffer from acid reflux and the severity of it. While it will take some time to find the right solution for you, one is out there. The sooner you start taking action the sooner you will get relief.

Now that you have accurate information about acid reflux you can take steps to resolve your problems with it.
